How Do I Know If a Digital Marketing Agency Is Experienced?
Choosing a digital marketing agency is an important decision for any business. Whether you run a startup, local business, healthcare company, e-commerce store, or established brand, the right agency can help you generate leads, increase online visibility, and build a stronger digital presence.
But there is one problem: many agencies claim to be experienced.
A website may say “10+ years of experience,” “100+ clients,” or “guaranteed results.” These statements can sound impressive, but they do not always tell you whether an agency can actually deliver results for your business.
So, how can you tell if a digital marketing agency is genuinely experienced?
The answer is to look beyond marketing claims. Check its work, people, processes, communication, reporting, strategy, and ability to explain results clearly.
1. Look at the Agency’s Track Record
An experienced agency should have a history of working with real businesses.
Start by checking how long the company has been operating and what type of clients it has worked with. Experience does not always mean working for decades. A smaller agency with several years of focused experience may be more effective than a large agency with a long history but little relevant expertise.
Look for evidence of actual work rather than relying only on claims.
Case studies, client results, campaign examples, before-and-after improvements, and testimonials can help you understand what the agency has actually achieved.
2. Check the Digital Marketing Agency’s Portfolio
A strong digital marketing agency’s portfolio can tell you a lot about its capabilities.
Look for examples related to your industry or business model. If you operate a local business, check whether the agency has experience with local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization.
If you run an e-commerce website, look for examples involving organic traffic, product visibility, conversion optimization, or paid advertising.
The goal is not to find an agency that has worked with exactly the same company as yours. Instead, look for evidence that the team understands similar challenges and knows how to solve them.
Be careful with portfolios that only display logos without explaining what the agency actually did.
A useful case study should explain the problem, strategy, work completed, and measurable outcome.
3. Ask What Results They Have Delivered
An experienced agency should be comfortable discussing measurable outcomes.
For SEO, this could include improvements in organic traffic, keyword visibility, qualified leads, conversions, or revenue.
For Google Ads, useful metrics may include conversion rate, cost per lead, cost per acquisition, and return on ad spend.
For social media, engagement can matter, but businesses should also understand whether social activity contributes to website traffic, enquiries, sales, or brand growth.
Be cautious if an agency talks only about impressions, followers, or clicks without connecting those numbers to business objectives.
Marketing should ultimately support the business.
4. Ask How They Will Measure Your Success
Before hiring an agency, ask a simple question:
“What will you measure to determine whether the campaign is successful?”
A good agency should ask about your goals before recommending a strategy.
Your objective may be to generate more leads, increase online sales, improve local visibility, reduce customer acquisition costs, or enter a new market.
The agency should then connect its work to those objectives.
For example, a local service business may care more about qualified phone calls and enquiries than thousands of website visitors.
An experienced agency understands this difference.
5. Check Whether They Have a Clear Process
Experienced agencies usually have a structured process.
For SEO, this may include an initial audit, keyword research, competitor analysis, technical improvements, content planning, on-page optimization, internal linking, authority building, and regular performance analysis.
For paid advertising, the process may involve audience research, campaign structure, landing-page review, conversion tracking, ad testing, bid management, and ongoing optimization.
This does not mean every agency should follow exactly the same process.
What matters is whether the agency can explain why it is recommending certain activities and how those activities connect to your goals.
6. Ask About the People Working on Your Account
Sometimes a company is sold by a senior expert but the actual work is handled by an inexperienced team.
Ask who will manage your account and who will be responsible for SEO, Google Ads, content, design, analytics, or social media.
You do not necessarily need a large team. You need people who understand the work and can communicate clearly.
Ask whether the people managing your campaigns have experience with businesses similar to yours.
This can reveal more than a company’s overall employee count.
7. Look at Their Own Online Presence
An agency’s own website can provide useful clues.
Check whether the website is professional, easy to navigate, technically sound, and regularly updated.
Look at its Google search visibility, content quality, social media presence, reviews, and business information.
This does not mean an agency must rank number one for every marketing keyword. An agency may focus its resources on client campaigns rather than aggressively promoting itself.
However, its own digital presence should demonstrate that the team understands the fundamentals it sells to customers.
8. Ask for Transparent Reporting
Experienced agencies do not hide behind complicated reports.
You should be able to understand what work was completed, what changed, what results were achieved, and what happens next.
A good monthly report may include organic traffic, rankings, leads, conversions, paid campaign performance, completed tasks, content published, technical improvements, and important observations.
The exact report depends on the service.
If you cannot understand the report without asking the agency to translate every number, the reporting process may need improvement.
9. Be Careful With Guaranteed Rankings
No legitimate agency can control Google’s organic rankings.
An agency promising “number one on Google in 30 days” should be treated carefully.
SEO performance depends on competition, website authority, content quality, technical factors, search intent, algorithm changes, and many other variables.
An experienced agency should provide realistic expectations rather than making guarantees it cannot control.
For example, an seo agency Ahmedabad may explain that local SEO improvements can take time and that results depend on the business’s market, competition, website, reviews, and existing authority.
Honest expectations are a positive sign.
10. Ask What Happens If Results Are Slow
This is one of the best questions you can ask before signing a contract.
Suppose your website does not improve after three months. What will the agency do?
A strong agency should have a process for analyzing underperformance.
It may review keyword targeting, search intent, content quality, technical issues, competitors, backlinks, conversion problems, or other factors.
The agency should be willing to adjust its strategy based on data.
SEO and digital marketing should not become a routine where the same tasks are repeated every month without considering performance.
11. Check Client Reviews Carefully
Reviews can help you understand how an agency communicates and handles client relationships.
Look for patterns rather than focusing on one review.
Do clients mention good communication? Do they talk about measurable results? Do they praise the agency’s strategy? Are there reviews from businesses similar to yours?
Also check whether reviews appear genuine and detailed.
An agency with hundreds of vague five-star reviews may provide less useful information than an agency with fewer but detailed reviews explaining the client’s experience.
12. Understand the Cost Before You Sign
Price alone does not tell you whether an agency is experienced.
A very cheap package may provide limited work, while a higher-priced service may include strategy, content, technical SEO, paid advertising, reporting, and dedicated specialists.
Instead of asking only “How much does it cost?”, ask what you are getting for the investment.
Understanding your startup spend on digital marketing is especially important if your business has a limited budget. The agency should help you prioritize activities rather than encouraging you to spend money on every available channel.
13. Look for Industry Understanding
Digital marketing is not the same for every business.
A local restaurant, hospital, software company, real estate firm, manufacturer, and e-commerce store have different customers and buying journeys.
An experienced agency should ask questions about your audience, competitors, products, sales process, average customer value, location, and business goals.
It should not send you the same strategy it uses for every client.
Final Thoughts
So, how do you know if a digital marketing agency is experienced?
Do not judge the agency only by its website, years in business, client logos, or sales presentation.
Look for evidence.
Review its case studies, understand its process, ask who will work on your account, examine its reporting, discuss realistic timelines, and ask how it responds when results are slower than expected.
A digital marketing company in Ahmedabad or any other location should be able to explain its strategy in simple language and connect marketing activities with real business goals.
Also remember that experience does not guarantee success. Your business, market, budget, competition, website, product, and customer demand all influence results.
The best agency is usually not the one making the biggest promises. It is the one that understands your business, sets realistic expectations, measures meaningful results, communicates honestly, and continuously improves its strategy.
That is the kind of experience that can create long-term value from digital marketing.
FAQs
1. How many years of experience should a digital marketing agency have?
There is no fixed number. Look at the quality of its work, relevant case studies, team expertise, client retention, and measurable results rather than years alone.
2. How can I verify an agency’s experience?
Check its case studies, client reviews, portfolio, team profiles, online presence, and examples of measurable results. You can also ask for references when appropriate.
3. Should I choose an agency that guarantees Google rankings?
Be cautious. No agency controls Google’s organic rankings, so guaranteed position-one promises are usually unrealistic.
4. Is a bigger digital marketing agency always better?
Not necessarily. A smaller agency may provide more focused attention, while a larger agency may offer more specialists. Choose based on expertise, communication, strategy, and results.
5. What should I ask before hiring a digital marketing agency?
Ask about its relevant experience, strategy, team, reporting, expected timeline, pricing, KPIs, communication process, and what it will do if the initial strategy does not produce the expected results.
